Megan Rondini Vigil Slated For Friday In Tuscaloosa
Posted on September 5, 2017, at 6 a.m. CST
The Vigil for Megan Rondini will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. CST in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The evening will be a combination of touching personal tributes that honor Megan Rondini's life and information about how we are changing things in Tuscaloosa to prevent another tragedy like Megan's.
Marchers will gather from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the grassy area between the DCH Regional Medical Center Emergency Room and the BP gas station. Participants can park for $2 in the DCH Medical Tower parking lot and a shuttle will be provided to bring them back to their cars.
The Vigil will begin at 6 p.m. with a member of Megan's family reading her favorite poem about courage. Then participants will get an update on the DCH SANE training. From there, marchers will proceed in silence, walking down University Blvd on the south side sidewalk.
The Vigil procession will pause for a few minutes in front of the UA President's House and again at Innisfree Irish Pub. Marchers will turn left onto Greensboro Avenue and finish in front of the Sheriff's Department/County Courthouse.
The evening will conclude with information on how concerned parties can get involved in future advocacy activities.
Shuttle tickets can be purchased for $1 via PayPal, Square or Venmo and must be purchased by event Wednesday evening so that organizers will know how large of a shuttle service we will need. Participants can Message Justice for Megan Rondini on Facebook for the ticket link.
Important Vigil Rules:
Event organizers have attained permits for the Vigil from both the City of Tuscaloosa and The University of Alabama. The sidewalk will be very crowded Friday night and University Blvd. will have a high traffic volume. It is important for the safety of Vigil participants (and the others who will be sharing the same space) that marchers follow the rules that have been agreed to by the event organizers, the City and the University.
Eight trained volunteers will flank the Vigil walkers at the front, middle and end edges to ensure that the we stay together, proceed in an organized manner west down University, don't trespass on private property or overflow into the street, and cross the N/S streets safely during crossing signals.
The only signage allowed will be hand-held poster-board or other soft/type paper products. No poles or stakes can be used.
Event organizers have a few Vigil shirts left for sale so please let them know if you need one. They sell for $20 and 100% of the money goes to the Rondini family for legal expenses incurred in fighting against the injustice in Megan's rape case.
Complementary bags of painted rocks will be available for pick-up directly after the event. The Rondini's would love to see Megan's reminder rocks all over the city!
Event organizers look forward to participants joining them for a powerful evening of honoring the life of Megan Rondini and fighting to change the systems that so atrociously failed this amazing young woman.
